IT took one tough season in the Orange District Cricket Association top grade, a shift to Dubbo and another 18 months hard yakka, but former Orange City all-rounder Stu Naden finally fulfilled a goal he set when he first landed in Australia three years ago.

    Earning a Western Zone cap.

Way back in 2012-13 Naden set himself lofty goals before his first season for Warriors, he wanted to “score 500 runs” and “push for higher representative honours”.

The former, well, he definitely didn’t achieve that, only scoring 130 runs at an average of 10.

But, he did snare 17 wickets with ball in hand and earn a spot in Orange’s representative side, and a call-up into the Mitchell Cricket Council squad.

But, the royal blue cap of Western Zone evaded him.

    Until now.

Naden is one of seven Dubbo-based players named in the Western squad to contest the 2015 NSW Country Cricket Championship.

“I’m over the moon,” Naden said.

“It’s hugely satisfying, when I first came to Australia my goal was to push myself as far as I possibly could, and play at the highest level I could.

“I’ve been working towards this [for a long time] and just wanted to put a decent string of performances together early this season, to have an impression on Dubbo representative cricket, and maybe then Western Zone selectors as well.

“I’ve worked pretty hard since September at both club and representative level and I’ve benefitted from that at the start of the year.”

Naden is Orange’s only link to this year’s Western squad, with Bathurst’s Josh Toole, Ryan Peacock and Aaron Seymour, Parkes’ Anthony Heraghty and Cowra’s Nick Berry the only players named who are not from Dubbo.

Western will look to defend last year’s title when the side heads to Wagga Wagga from November 20-22.
