Trevor is one of four Forbes men who is tackling the Forster Half Ironman event on the state’s North Coast on Sunday.

While he has been training for the last 14 weeks for the 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21km run, he isn’t sure how he’ll cope with any of the three distances, let alone the combined 113km journey.

“I haven’t done any of those distances individually, let alone one after the other,” Trevor said yesterday.

Trevor is a keen cyclist and regularly covers 90km in group rides, but he says Ironman cycling is considerably harder, with rules stipulating no group riding.

He has been training with Nick Field, Nick Turner and Andy Hardy, who have each completed several triathlons of this distance.

Nick Turner says he believes Trevor will cope well, despite his nerves. However he said it was a brave act to tackle his first half Ironman at 53.

“It’s reasonably straight forward to do any one of these three legs in isolation but when you combine them all on the one day then you are looking at a completely different set of cards, and for this reason I dip my lid to ‘Wompy’ as getting into a multi discipline endurance sport in the second half of life takes plenty of will power, determination, courage and self belief,” Turner said.

Trevor said he had been encouraged by his training partners, but also by his local cycling mate, Marco Carelli, no stranger to endurance events himself.

“The best advice I’ve had is from Marco who just told me not to get caught up in the excitement and let the adrenaline take over. He said ‘just go easy, easy, easy and get to that finish line’,” he said.
