All past and present pony club members and their families are invited to attend the celebration on Saturday, November 7 at the Forbes Pony Club grounds in Forrester Street from 5.30pm.

The Forbes Pony Club has been an equestrian institution for the Forbes community and this year proudly marks its 50th anniversary.

The club was officially formed on September 10 1965 with approximately 25 people attending the meeting.

The club colours were white shirt, lemon tie, brown riding cap and jodhpurs.

As per an excerpt from an article in the Forbes Advocate, Friday October 15, 1965:

‘The Forbes Pony Club, formed recently, has started a drive for more members.

“As long as they have an animal to ride, any people interested may join the club,” the secretary Mr Sid Collits, said yesterday.”

Membership is not limited at this stage only to those who have ponies.’

These days the club consists of 71 members, 39 of these are competitive riding members aged 25 years and younger.

The uniform has changed since 1965 to its now iconic red jumper, tartan tie, white shirt and red saddlecloth.

The club can also boast that it has a famous former member, David Cameron, who is now hailed two-time Australian Show Jumping Champion.

Dave has graciously taken time out of his campaigning to come along to the 50 year celebrations and will say a few words regarding his journey from a Forbes Pony Club member to current Australian Champion.

His amazing career serves to highlight what can be achieved from the grassroots of the pony club movement.

A barbecue will be held on Saturday with soft drink and dessert provided. BYO alcohol and nibbles.

More information is on the 50 Year – Forbes Pony Club Facebook page, which has an array of old photos and information.

Any photographic or pony club memorabilia that can be copied or photographed for use on the page and at the 50 year celebration would be much appreciated.
